Marble Hall Unterkünfte
Some 200 kilometres north of Johannesburg, in the Limpopo province of South Africa, is the town of Marble Hall. This settlement is special as it has historical and contemporary significance in South Africa and plays an important role in the country’s economy.
The town of Marble Hall gets its name from the primary economic activity practiced in the area: marble mining. Marble was first discovered in the area by Christoffel Visagie and his family when they visited the area on a hunting safari in the early 1920’s.
Today, the Marble Lime Mine produces 15 different types of marble which provide yet another boost to South Africa’s already-flourishing mining industry. The mine however, is not the only industry in the area as Marble Hall is also considered a hub for surrounding farming communities. Agricultural endeavours in the area are evidenced by the many orange orchards, cotton farms and wheat farms.
One of the visitors’ attractions in Marble Hall is the Jugomaro Predator Park, where one can interact intimately with lions, tigers, wolves and other predators. It is also home to other species of game like kudu, eland, giraffe and ostriches.
The town is also set in the heart of Ndebele country, and opportunities to interact with this South African cultural group are there for those with a sense of ‘cultural adventure’.
When Marble Hall was laid out in 1942 and proclaimed in 1945, it was named Marmerhol which is ‘marble hole’ in Afrikaans. During the Anglo Boer War the name of the town was anglicised and became, Marble Hall. It was named this because of the marble hole which marked the beginning of the Marble Lime Mine.
