Maun Accommodatie
The town of Maun is an important settlement located in the north west of Botswana. While only being the 5th largest town in Botswana, as it turns out it is a vital place for one of Botswana’s most important industries – tourism.
The town was established in 1915 as the capital of the Batawana tribe. It lies on the banks of the Thamalakane River and while it was once a small village with a distinctly rural atmosphere, as the tourism industry has developed and more and more international travellers have caught wind of Northern Bostwana’s gems, the town has started to spread out along the banks of the river.
Today it is pretty well-developed, although remnants of the traditional rondavel structures are still present and in many instances traditional architecture stands alongside modern buildings. Despite its rapid development, it still maintains a relatively rural air though, and still acts as a trading centre for herdsman in the surrounding area to come and buy and sell cattle. The notorious roaming donkeys and goats also contribute to this rural vine.
The reason that Maun has developed so quickly recently is that it serves as the headquarters for many tour companies operating in the Okavango Delta nearby. It is also a centre for people servicing the lodges nearby. Thanks to this development, Maun is now home to shopping centres, hotels and car hire, as well as an international airport, by which many tourists enter the region before kick-starting their African Odyssey.
