McGregor Accommodatie
McGregor is a delightful town in the Western Cape of South Africa. It liesat the foot of the RiviersonderendMountains and is surrounded by nature reserves and wineries and filled withquirky, creative locals.
The town was established in 1861 but was originally known as Lady Grey. However,after repeated confusion with the Lady Grey settlement in the Eastern Cape, thesettlement was renamed after its Dutch Reformed Church minister, ReverendAndrew McGregor, in 1905. Today McGregor is a gorgeous rural town full ofthatched cottages and quiet streets. In fact, McGregor is so well preservedthat it claims to be among the bestpreserved examples of a mid-19th century town in the Western Cape. For those who are seriously interestedin the history of the town and its surrounding areas, the McGregor Museum should be your first port of call.
Over the years McGregor has built up areputation for being a holistic healinghub. Many spiritual souls are drawn to the area thanks to the ley lines which are said to intersect nearthe town and grace it with a special energy. In the town you can find yogateachers, aromatherapy practitioners and emotional stress and metaphysicalexperts. A large number of spiritual retreats are regularly hostedin the area too.
Another group which are attracted toMcGregor are artists and the town hosts its own permanent ‘art route’ which encompasses galleries, studios and‘open houses.’ Like the holistic side of the town, the creative community alsooffers numerous courses and retreats.Sometimes the holistic and the creative are even combined!
It would be a disservice to the town if itsbeauty wasn’t emphasised, and there are plenty of nature reserves and mountains to be explored on foot, mountain bike orhorseback. For the more languid, the BreedeRiver Wine Route criss-crosses McGregor ensuring that there are plenty ofplaces to lunch under the trees and sip great home-grown wines. There are ofcourse plenty of restaurants, coffeeshops and bistros within the town too.
