Melville (JHB) Verblyf - 2
Melville is one of the most vibrant suburbs in Gauteng’s capital, Johannesburg. It was proclaimed by a land surveyor, Edward Harker Vincent Melville in October 1896. At the time it was touted as having a glorious view of the wooded landscape to the north of the (then much smaller) city and the mountains in Pretoria. These days however, Melville is a decidedly more urban area, and one of Johannesburg’s most cosmopolitan at that.
It is located in Joburg’s northern suburbs, within close proximity to the main campus of the University of Johannesburg (in Auckland Park), which accounts for much of Melville’s patronage. It is an old suburb with a young heart, full of clubs and bars, appealing to the student crowd and young, professionals. It is also one of the epicentres of the city’s gay scene.
Melville, in all its bohemian goodness, is often lauded as Joburg’s cultural heart too. It is here you will find Joburg’s much-talked about second-hand book stores, overflowing antiques stores and myriad restaurants and coffee shops which line the streets. Melville, along with Parkhurst and Greenside, is unique among Joburg’s suburbs for having a street-café culture, unlike the rest of the city where eateries are all safely tucked away within the confines of shopping malls.
Mellville is also famous for the Melville Koppies, which constitute a nature reserve. The reserve not only boasts great views over the city and a bit of open space for trail running and dog walking, but some interesting archaeological sites too, which include remnants of the stone and iron ages.
If Melville isn’t great enough on its own, add tourists to the mix of young vibey locals and you’ll have a sense of what a dynamic, interesting and appealing little area it is.

The neighborhood was vibrant, plenty of stores to explore (even a second-hand bookstore) and restaurants. I recommend Cafe Tilt for a a healthy lunch and tea/coffee.
