Montagu Verblyf - 4
The little town of Montagu is a real gem to stumble upon, situated on Route 62 just 2 hours from Cape Town. It is acknowledged as the gateway to the Klein Karoo but really it is much more than that.
Montague life is slow and the people are friendly. A stroll down Long Street might give you a taste, as many of the buildings hark back to the days of the ox-wagon explorers, giving Montagu the record for more national monuments on a single street than any other town in South Africa.
Furthermore, there are myriad activities to sink your teeth into. For the outdoor adventurer, Montagu offers some of the best rock climbing in South Africa, an array of mountain bike routes and hiking trails of various lengths. The town has an abundance of bird-life, including the rare black eagle, which you might be lucky enough to spot while out on a walkabout.
If you prefer a more relaxing getaway, Route 62 is a recognised wine route, producing some excellent wines. The Saturday morning market is famous for its deli-style delights, particularly cheeses and lovely crafts. If you’re looking for an alternative activity, the tractor trips are a very popular novelty tour, taking you to the top of a nearby hill to admire the view from up high. On the opposite end of the scale, you could hop on a boat for a river and wine tour on the near-by Breede River. Finally there are the natural hot-springs, providing a warm, submersive experience, and a healthy little restaurant culture.
Montagu accommodation options are as varied as the town itself, offering anything from camping on the outskirts to luxurious stays in boutique hotels and BnB’s on the high street.
Stay in Montagu for a wonderful weekend escape.
