Mookgopong (Naboomspruit) Verblyf
Naboomspruit, or Mookgophong as it is officially known, is a small town in South Africa’s Limpopo province. It lies in the foothills of the iconic, picturesque Waterberg Mountain range and is defined by fresh air, sweeping views and an open sky. Another plus for Naboomspruit accommodation is that it is just 90 minutes from Pretoria. It is also exceptionally close to Modimolle and Mokopane.
Naboomspruit came into being in much the same way as many other South African towns did. Precious resources, in this instance tin and later platinum, were discovered in the area and a small settlement sprung up soon after. It was declared a municipality and thus given official status in 1938.
Today one of the main contributors to the town’s economy is agriculture. Taking a drive through the area you will not only see cattle grazing, but also orchards of citrus fruit, nut trees and the odd corn field.
Where tourism is concerned, Naboomspruit’s location in the Waterberg region of Limpopo is a major draw card. There are numerous game reserves in the area, notably malaria-free. Smaller nature reserves are also close by such as the Nylsvlei Nature Reserve and the Doorndrai Dam – both within a 30 minute drive of Naboomspruit.
Nylsvlei is one of South Africa’s largest inland flood plains. This wide stretch near the Nyl River is particularly famous for being a haven for birds – 365 species call it home. Among them, 8 are red data species which are considered extremely rare. In Nylsvlei one can cycle walk or drive the network of pathways in order to explore the reserve.
Doorndraai on the other hand boasts a wide variety of woodland vegetation from acacia to riverine woodland. Animals to be spotted include brown hyena, various antelope, African wild cat and more. You can also indulge in hiking, angling, boating on the dam and picnicking.
