Musina Logement
The town of Musina is located in the far north of Limpopo Province. In fact it is the northern-most town in South Africa. Just a few kilometres from the Zimbabwean border post, in a very rural part of the country, you may expect the town to be a little sleepy, but what you’ll actually find is an extremely busy little hub.
Musina has a permanent population of just over 40 000, but can often feel much busier thanks to the constant swathes of travellers, in all their guises, en route to either Zimbabwe or other parts of South Africa. Musina is connected to Johannesburg via the N1 highway (which reaches as far as Cape Town), and as proof of the town’s busy-ness, is widely recognised as one of the busiest roads in Africa.
The town was officially established in 1968 by a group of European settlers who ‘discovered’ the area’s copper reserves. However, the area was initially settled by the Musina tribe – the first people to find copper in the region. It is this tribe name that gives the town its current name (prior to 2003 it was known as Messina – a misspelling by the Europeans).
The town, which lies in a semi-arid region, characterised by thorn trees and low shrubs, claims mining as its prominent economic activity, with copper, iron ore, coal, diamonds, semi-precious stones and graphite being found in abundance. There are also citrus, date, mango and tomato plantations found in the surrounding area.
Naturally Musina is a popular overnight stop on journeys to and from Zimbabwe, but if you stay just a little longer, you’ll discover that the Musina Nature Reserve outside town is worth a visit, if only to marvel at the iconic Baobab trees preserved there, as well as one of the world’s oldest rocks.
