Nahoon Verblyf - 2

Nahoon is a middle class suburb in the small but friendly city of East London, in South Africa’s Eastern Cape. It is located to the north of East London’s harbour and the city’s central business district. The suburb, just like many of East London’s suburbs, is decidedly green, and the developed parts, which boast large properties and big houses, are interspersed with tracts of jungle-like vegetation. This jungle feel is heightened, of course, by the presence of the river.

Nahoon gets its name from the Nahoon River, a long water way which travels through one of the southern-most mangrove swamps in the world on its way to the Indian Ocean. It is one of 3 big rivers which define East London, dividing it into parts. The other rivers are the Gonubie and the Buffalo Rivers. The Nahoon Dam located further up the river, supplies water for some parts of East London.

Nahoon the suburb is located on the western bank of the river, and is flanked on either side by Woodleigh and Nahoon Beach respectively. The suburb of Nahoon Beach is the only thing standing in between Nahoon and the Indian Ocean, making a trip to the beach very easy. This fact is especially noteworthy for surfers, as just next to the Nahoon River mouth, lies Nahoon Reef, one of East London’s famous surf spots.

Just on the other side of the river is the Nahoon Local Authority Nature Reserve and nearby is the Nahoon Point Nature Reserve, which boasts a series of boardwalks with spectacular views over the ocean.
