Nelspruit Unterkünfte - 4
You can find Nelspruit, an agriculturally significant city, in the north east of South Africa. Its official name is Mbombela and is the capital of Mpumalanga. The city is positioned 330 kilometres from Johannesburg and just 100 kilometres from Mozambique. It lies on the important Maputo Corridor trade route and is also a mere stone’s throw away from the world famous Kruger National Park. As a result, Nelspruit accommodation mainly serves travellers who are stopping by en-route to somewhere else.
While the little city mainly caters to short-term visitors, it is set amongst lovely scenery which can be enjoyed for days. The climate is subtropical with summer rainfall, mild winters and warm summers – its altitude at the foot of the Drakensberg prevents the summer heat from becoming too severe. As a result of this climate, the area is renowned for subtropical produce such as citrus, mango, avocado pear, banana and macadamia nuts. This lush farm landscape as well as natural vegetation provides the backdrop for the city.
Things to do in Nelspruit tend towards the natural world and many are fascinating despite their low key status. For starters, there are numerous hikes and walking trails to be done in the mountains surrounding Nelspruit. For a moderate walk you could visit the Lowveld National Botanical Garden just outside the city, where you can catch a glimpse of the indigenous flora up close and have the choice of numerous walking trails.
Sudwala Caves are some of the oldest caves in the world and a tour through them will expose you to fascinating examples of stalagmites and stalactites. Upon exiting the caves you can wonder around the cultural centre and look at some dinosaur fossils.
The area around Nelspruit is also dotted with San rock paintings, and a scenic drive will take you to the Blyde River Canyon before you have time to blink.
Regardless of whether you come to explore Nelspruit or simply stop over on the way to Mozambique or the Kruger Park, you’ll be welcome here.
