Elandshoek Unterkünfte
Elandshoek refers to a rural area in the heart of Mpumalanga, South Africa. The area, which lies in the region of the Elands River (which may well be the reason for the area’s name), is located on the N4 highway which connects Nelspruit, the capital of Mpumalanga and Pretoria, in Gauteng.
Elandshoek is well and truly part of the lowveld region of South Africa and much of it consists of savannah. This kind of vegetation is what many people imagine when they think about the great African bush, and is the most common habitat for much of South Africa’s wildlife.
The Elandshoek area is home to a number of small nature reserves and antelope species such as impala, eland and bushbuck are common. The city of Nelspruit is within 50 kilometres and just beyond it the famous attraction Kruger National Park awaits you, with its host of birdlife and the big 5.
There is enough variation in the region’s geography to provide some good hiking trails and scenic drives. The Starvation Creek Nature Reserve, home to Starvation Creek Falls, for example offers some splendid scenery and there are plenty of trails available on private farms in the area.
Elandshoek experiences a subtropical climate with hot, humid days during summer (December to March) and cooler, drier days in winter. The rainy season falls between September and May. It is preferable to avoid the wet season for numerous reasons. For starters, the chances of contracting malaria are higher during this time and if you are planning on game watching your chances of spotting animals are lower as you cannot bank on them gathering at water points. Furthermore, it’s no fun hiking in the rain.
Fishing in the Elands River, close to the Elandshoek railway station is also popular.
