Northcliff Verblyf
Northcliff is a suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa’s commercial hub and the largest city in Gauteng. The suburb is situated on the Northcliff Ridge, which is the second highest point in Johannesburg, and at 1087 metres, is only a metre shorter than Johannesburg’s highest point, the Observatory Ridge.
Northcliff is a very affluent neighbourhood as the demand for property there is high. This is because of the stunning views one gets from almost any property on the ridge. It is also a popular residential area owing to its secluded nature. Being higher than the rest of Johannesburg, it is also separated from the other suburbs on the flat land.
Northcliff is renowned in Johannesburg for the Northcliff Hill, also known as Aasvoëls Kop, which means vultures’ hill in English. The name is thanks to the vultures which inhabit the ridge. The top of the hill offers clear views across the city, with Joburg’s central business district to the south and the expansive, affluent northern suburbs to the north (no surprises there). The view from the hill is a particularly spectacular spot at dusk and night time, when the city lights twinkle as far as the eye can see. A great way to experience the view is to pack a picnic and head up there for sundowners, something which many locals do with aplomb.
The Northcliff Ridge is home to 3 vegetation types and a number of small animals and birds – another thing which adds to its uniqueness. For those who are less nature-inclined, the Cresta Shopping Centre, one of the biggest malls in the Southern Hemisphere, is located on the boundary between Cresta and Northcliff, and will keep shopaholics entertained for hours.
