Observatory (CPT) Logement
Observatory, or Obs as it is affectionately known, is Cape Town’s most bohemian neighbourhood. It is bordered by Mowbray to the south and Salt River to the north-west. It is primarily considered a student area, due to its proximity to the University of Cape Town, but also attracts the creative and artsy crowd.
Observatory has a rich and important history, as during apartheid it was one of the few de facto 'grey' suburbs where all races lived together. This spirit of diversity lives on today with Observatory’s diverse population of races, ages and nationalities.
Observatory is best known for its nightlife and entertainment. The main entertainment area is to be found around the Lower Main Road, where you will find quirky restaurants, cafes, bars, live music and night clubs. The highlight of the annual events calendar is “Obs Fest”, a 3-day celebration of local arts, culture and music, usually taking place in December.
Other attractions in Observatory include the South African Astronomical Observatory, for which the area is named. It grew from the Royal Observatory at the Cape of Good Hope, founded in 1820 and is open to the public every second Saturday of the month. Groote Schuur Hospital is another famous Obs landmark, home to the first heart transplant in the world.
Sports fanatics will enjoy the soccer and hockey stadium at Hartleyvale. For the keen golfers, there is a driving range and a nine hole golf course housed at the River Club.
Observatory tends to have an abundance of budget accommodation and BnB’s to cater for the increasing numbers of overseas students and tourists who frequent the area.
