Parkhurst Unterkünfte
Situated between two of Johannesburg’s most important nodes, that is the CBD and Sandton, Parkhurst is an extremely convenient place to base yourself during a visit to the city. Technically it falls within the prestigious Northern Suburbs and while denser and more compact than areas like Bryanston, Parkhurst is still a very pleasant place to find yourself.
The suburb was established in 1904 but has undergone many incarnations since then. At one point it was known for the string of antique shops which populated 4th Avenue. They’ve been replaced though by numerous design stores, boutiques, coffee shops and restaurants. Pankhurst’s 4th Avenue is one of the few places in the city to boast a sidewalk café culture, and subsequently is popular with Joburgers who fancy an alternative to the dominant mall culture.
However, should malls be your joie de vivre, Sandton City, the largest shopping centre in South Africa, is easily accessible from Parkhurst, and with it the endless shopping, dining and entertainment options it boasts. The Sandton Convention Centre is also easy to get to as are some other Sandton attractions.
To the south of Parkhurst you’ll find the old Joburg CBD and the funky gentrifying suburbs of Newtown and the Maboneng Precinct. Newtown is being touted as the new home of the Johannesburg art scene, and the stunning graffiti splashing the walls and pillars everywhere you look seems to support that theory. Maboneng is also an excellent showcase of urban renewal with a string of uber cool boutiques, restaurants and other stores to explore. The popular Market on Main is also situated in the Maboneng Precinct.
All this and more is to be found on the doorstep of pretty little Parkhurst.
