Parys Verblyf - 2

The quaint little town of Parys (Afrikaans for ‘Paris’) is so named because its position on the Vaal River reminded a German surveyor working on the settlement at the time, of the larger, European city which languishes on the River Seine. While Parys has not caught up to its older sister in terms of size nor diversity, Parys is increasingly popular as a holiday destination among South Africans, especially Gauteng dwellers.

Parys is situated in the Northern Free State, just 120 kilometres from Johannesburg. It is filled with old buildings such as the Anglican Church, the Dutch Reformed Church and the Parys Museum and has become known as an antique hub. It is also home to myriad artists, many of whom have opened little galleries along Bree and Water Streets. The old world charm of Parys combined with its natural surroundings have made Parys an extremely popular choice amongst investors, so much so that it now boasts the highest per capita investment in South Africa.

Parys attractions which enhance its charm include a number of breweries – where honey beer and buchu beer are the norm- a brandy distillery and mampoer distillery (mampoer is a traditional South African moonshine). Alcohol aside, Parys also has a healthy culinary scene and a number of interesting coffee shops in venues such as book shops and even an old bus!

Nearby attractions include the largest wild olive forest in South Africa and a berry farm cultivating South Africa’s only black raspberries. One of the most famous attractions however, is the Vredefort Dome, an ancient meteor impact site. The dome is a world heritage site owing to its geological importance to the global science fraternity.

Where non-scientists are concerned, it is a nature lover’s and adrenaline junkies’ version of heaven. Within the dome there is exceptional birdlife and 300 kilometres of wide open space. Vredefort is also suitable for mountain biking, 4x4ing abseiling and hot air balloon rides can also be organised.

Parys happens to be the only section of the Vaal River with rapids, making it a fun destination for white water rafting. For a more sedentary activity you can try fly-fishing.  Whether you stay at one of the more modern hotels or an old school self-catering style establishment, Parys is definitely worth a visit, to do in beautiful surroundings.

Parys
Access to the Parys Golf Course was very difficult.
The one bridge is broken and the signage directing one to the second bridge, is extremely poor.

Parys
Loved it just as I remembered when I was a child, The should however improve on the roads though and the water quality, All the shops we visited was very welcoming and friendly

Parys
Parys was lovely. We did not realize that all the restaurants close after the weekend. Fortunately we found Capellas open on Monday. On Tuesday morning we found Dark Chocolate. It was by far the highlight of our Parys visit.

Parys
We experienced peace and rate of crime seem to be at a very low level. People greet each other, even if they do not know you. Homeless people are not a threat to the community. I loved the active local economy activities and the manner in which are strategized. That kind of strategy should be extended to the local townships, then Parys will be fully a good tourists attraction. Parys is very beautiful and peaceful.
