Accommodation near The Vredefort Dome
Situated 120km south-west of Johannesburg, in the small farming town of Vredefort, lies the oldest and largest meteorite impact site our earth has ever known, the Vredefort Dome. This wholly unique geological phenomenon was formed some 2000 million years ago after a mountain-sized asteroid plummeted into the earth at a warp speed of 10 kilometres per second. The crater, which is 300km in length, stretches from Johannesburg and into the North West Province.
The dome, which is the central part of the impact, is so called because the rock layers of the earth were bent inward to resemble a giant, upside-down bowl. It is recognised as a World Heritage site and attracts thousands of tourists each year. Having been the site of such a catastrophic event, the area has transformed, over time, into a tranquil haven with plenty of outdoor activities for visitors to take part in. Adventure seekers looking for a new thrill can test their bodies against the dome’s challenging geological features, where one can abseil down the crags of the rock face. Individuals who are height conscious can explore the tunnels that are also found on the site.
While in the area, travellers are encouraged to explore Vredefort. Existing as a rural farming community, the landscape is unspoilt and the scenic beauty is unparalleled. Due to restricted development occurring over the years, the area is home to a wide variety of small animals as well as numerous plant species.
Visitors who want to learn about the town’s major historical events can visit the Anglo-Boer site nearby. Here you’ll fascinating battalion remnants from a bygone era. Travel further field to the neighbouring town of Venterskoon and bear witness to the largest wild olive forest in South Africa. Travellers looking to fully immerse themselves in the culture can take a visit to the area’s main distillery. For those who dare, a taste of 'witblits' - an incredibly strong, locally produced spirit- is up for the taking.

Parys
Access to the Parys Golf Course was very difficult.
The one bridge is broken and the signage directing one to the second bridge, is extremely poor.

Parys
Parys was lovely. We did not realize that all the restaurants close after the weekend. Fortunately we found Capellas open on Monday. On Tuesday morning we found Dark Chocolate. It was by far the highlight of our Parys visit.

Parys
We experienced peace and rate of crime seem to be at a very low level. People greet each other, even if they do not know you. Homeless people are not a threat to the community. I loved the active local economy activities and the manner in which are strategized. That kind of strategy should be extended to the local townships, then Parys will be fully a good tourists attraction. Parys is very beautiful and peaceful.
