This wholly unique geological phenomenon was formed some 2000 million years ago after a mountain-sized asteroid plummeted into the earth at a warp speed of 10 kilometres per second. The crater, which is 300km in length, stretches from Johannesburg and into the North West Province.

The dome, which is the central part of the impact, is so called because the rock layers of the earth were bent inward to resemble a giant, upside-down bowl. It is recognised as a World Heritage site and attracts thousands of tourists each year.
