Pietermaritzburg Central Verblyf

Pietermaritzburg is the administrative capital of KwaZulu Natal. It is located on the N3 highway between Durban and Johannesburg and is considered to be the gateway to the picturesque KwaZulu Natal Midlands. It has a scenic location, based among green rolling hills, many of which are farmlands. The small city is a hub of industrial activity, producing aluminium, timber and dairy and is also home to a number of educational institutions, including a campus of the University of KwaZulu Natal.

Pietermaritzburg is also known for being one of the best preserved cities of Victorian architecture in the world. Not surprisingly, Pietermaritzburg Central, the oldest part of town is a treasure trove of old Victorian buildings. It is also where many of Maritzburg’s (as it’s known colloquially) attractions are to be found.

Built in the year 1900, the City Hall, which was once the largest all-brick construction in the Southern Hemisphere, is located in the centre as are the Tatham Art gallery and the Voortrekker Museum. Many more museums and memorials are also located in this central part of Pietermaritzburg.

Another winning attribute of Pietermaritzburg Central is that even the attractions which are situated further out, such as the SANBI botanical garden or the Scottville Racecourse are easy to get to.

Pietermaritzburg, with its Voortrekker history and later, British occupation is a city often associated with intellectual points of interest. However, the city and its surroundings are also pivotal in the existence of many of KwaZulu Natal’s biggest sporting events. The Comrades Marathon for example, which has been undertaken by local and international athletes since 1921, is an ultra-marathon run between Durban and Pietermaritzburg in alternating directions from year to year. The Dusi Canoe Marathon is another big sporting event, which also takes competitors from Pietermaritzburg to Durban, but this time via the region’s waterways.
