Pongola Game Reserve Unterkünfte
Pongola Game Reserve is a private conservation initiative in Northern Zululand, an area in the far north of KwaZulu Natal. It is close to the Swaziland border and the nearest big town is Vryheid. Pongola Game Reserve lies adjacent to the original Pongola Nature Reserve which was declared in 1894 by the president of what was then known as the Transvaal, Paul Kruger (of Kruger National Park fame). Both are named after the slow, wide Pongola River which passes through the properties.
The area in which the game reserve is located experiences a subtropical climate, which can make it extremely hot and humid in the summer months, between December and March. The environment is defined largely by hilly grasslands which bend and wave in the wind, and the large, man-made Pongolapoort Dam, which is fed by the river, is definitely the focal point of the reserve.
The reserve is home to a wide variety of animal species, making a safari here an exciting and satisfying experience. Among the mammal species are buck like blue wildebeest, and kudu, and you will also find buffalo, rhino, leopard and elephant, 4 of the big 5, in the reserve. The reserve also boasts great bird-watching opportunities.
While normal vehicle safaris are on offer, the reserve excels at unusual tours, like rhino tracking, walking safaris, safari cruises and canoe safaris, all of which provide one with a different perspective of the African bush.
