Accommodation in Port St. Johns is popular with those wishing to experience the ‘wilder side’ of South Africa, being located on the Wild Coast as it is. The Wild Coast is an exciting and beautiful stretch of coast in the Transkei region of the Eastern Cape.
Port St. Johns is 220 kilometres from East London, and 70 kilometres from the Transkei’s unofficial capital, Mthatha. It lies at the mouth of the Umzimvubu River which provides today’s visitors with spectacular views, and yesteryear visitors with a reason for founding a small town.
In the late 1870’s the British negotiated with local Pondo chiefs in order to gain rights to the river’s banks and adjacent territories. Later siltation in the river nulled this asset (as the river became too shallow for ships) but Port St. Johns had already been established.
Today the town is a metaphorical island perched between the ocean and the encroaching Transkei jungle-like vegetation. The climate is subtropical – humid with summer rains, making spring (September to December) and Autumn (March-May) desirable seasons in which to visit.
When you do visit, no doubt the rugged coastline and luscious green landscape will capture your heart. Port St. Johns is known as the centre of the Wild Coast tourism industry for a reason.
The town itself maintains a rural air about it but the influx of locals to this relatively job-rich part of Transkei, mixed with the foreign visitors, gives it a unique atmosphere. This is a place where modern Kwaito music blares from mini-bus taxi speakers and beaded sangomas walk the streets for their weekly shopping outing, while Aryan tourists stroll to the shop for cigarettes and snap photos of the main street.
Attractions in and around Port St. Johns include the spectacular Umzimvubu river, which cuts a deep gorge into the reddish rock, hiking along this notorious coast, visiting one (or 3) secluded beaches and getting a taste for rural South Africa and a glimpse into isiXhosa traditions.
