Richmond (NC)Richmond will interest book-lovers as being South Africa's only "book town" - boasting about six second-hand bookshops. It holds its annual book festival on the last full weekend of October. It is also a very beautiful and typical Karoo "dorpie" consisting of a few streets lined with many well-preserved Victorian houses. There are also a few eateries. And not much else... i.e. the perfect little getaway!It is also more-or-less half-way between Cape Town and Johannesburg, making it the perfect stopover. - Catherine Welsh
