Rietfontein Verblyf

Rietfontein is a suburb of Pretoria, which shares a name with a tiny town on the South Africa/Namibia border. The suburb is a lot more hospitable though than the town, which lies in an arid area. Rietfontein is located north east of Pretoria’s central business district and is surrounded by neighbourhoods such as Wonderboom and Arcadia.

Being one of the northern-most parts of Pretoria, the presence of the Magaliesberg mountains is felt a lot more keenly, and the mountain lends a wonderful peaceful air to the neighbourhood. Many of the accommodation establishments in the area have indeed exploited its presence, building decks, for example, which ensure guests have a great view.

Despite Rietfontein being situated near the edge of the city, it is still easy to get to tourist hot spots like the central business district with its impressive buildings, or Hatfield, the bona fide bar and restaurant hub of Pretoria.

A little closer to Rietfontein though is the Wonderboom Nature Reserve. This reserve was once home to the world-famous wonderboom, or miracle tree in English. Today there is little left of it thanks to fire and a parasitic tree disease, but the 5.5 metre stump is still there and as they say, imagination is a powerful thing. The wonderboom’s daughter trees are scattered throughout the reserve and the chances of spotting monkeys, antelope, birds and dassies (rock hyraxes) are good.

Another reserve nearby is the Roodeplaat Nature Reserve, whose focal point is the dam. At the south end are 2 bird hides for the twitchers among you, while the north is utilised for water activities like canoeing. The reserve is home to many species, with 170 bird species recorded and array of mammals like zebra, kudu, waterbuck and impala.
