Roodekrans Unterkünfte
Roodekrans is a neat suburb of Roodepoort,a town on Gauteng’s West Rand. Technically speaking, Roodepoort is part of greater Johannesburg, but it was for many years its own municipality whose economy relied on mining.
Roodekrans is situated in the northern reaches of Roodepoort close to the ‘boundary’ (the two towns actually blend into one another rather than having a clearly-defined boundary) with Krugersdorp. Unlike some wealthier parts of Johannesburg, Roodekrans isn’t very ostentatious and most of the houses are neat, single story abodes with pretty gardens. The neighbourhood is quite relaxed and while there isn’t terribly much going on in Roodekrans itself Roodepoort has some nice attractions. Furthermore Roodekrans’ location so far to the north west puts it in excellent proximity to some interesting sites.
One of Roodepoort’s most famed attractions(at least among Joburgers) is the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens. The garden is a member of the South African National Botanical Institute and is said to be one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in the world. Its main claim to fame is the nesting Verraeux’s eagles which have made a home in the Roodekrans ridge which bisects the reserve.
The Roodepoort Country Club is also easily accessible from Roodekrans. A much more spectacular attraction though is the Cradle of Humankind and the Sterkfontein Caves, which although outside of Roodepoort, can be accessed in no time from Roodekrans.
Muldersdrift, a popular weeding and conference destination, thanks to its country-like setting is also a hop skip and a jump from Roodekrans.
