Salt Rock Logement

Salt Rock lies on the KwaZulu Natal North Coast, just a few kilometres north of Durban. As is the case for many settlements along this coast, Salt Rock  is an ideal base for a beach holiday. The sunny skies, sandy beach and good weather conspire to ensure that every day on the beach is an idyllic experience, leaving you planning your return trip even before you lose sight of it in your rear-view window.

Salt Rock owes its existence to Basil Hulett (of Hulett sugar) and his wife, Gwen, who were responsible for the construction of the Salt Rock Hotel, the initial seed which sparked the surrounding development. It was named, or so they say, because Shaka’s (the infamous Zulu chief and warrior) hand maidens would clamber the rocks every morning collecting salt at low tide.

Today Salt Rock consists of everything from hotels to self-catering houses and bed & breakfasts. The pleasing climate keeps people coming back. The climate on this coast is subtropical, with summers being infamous for the hot, humid conditions while winters are drier and  milder. Lying on the Indian Ocean means the water temperatures are consistently warm through the year, promising good beach weather all year round.

The main beach at Salt Rock is protected by shark nets and there are qualified lifeguards on duty 7 days a week. There is a pleasant tidal pool to swim in too if you find the wide open sea intimidating. Fishing is a popular activity here and the reefs just off shore will keep scuba divers enthralled.

The Salt Rock Country Club provides the opportunity for tennis, bowls and squash matches among other things, and don’t forget about the much talked-about nightlife – bars and restaurants – of this little town.

Salt Rock lies to the north of Ballito and is within a 40 minute car ride of Durban.
