Sandhurst Verblyf

In the north of Johannesburg you’ll find a group of affluent residential suburbs as well as the business area which has largely usurped the traditional Johannesburg CBD. These areas are grouped into a larger area known as Sandton. Along with ‘burbs like Sandown and Bryanston (whose names were amalgamated to give us the name ‘Sandton’), Sandhurst is one of Sandton’s oldest and wealthiest parts.

Sandhurst is a peaceful suburb popular among the wealthy for many reasons, not least because it is both pretty and secure. Like many of the northern suburbs, Sandhurst is known for its low population density, a unique trait in a bustling city like Johannesburg. It is characterised by large, old stately homes and rambling gardens, lovingly tended to by housewives or their gardeners. The streets are wide and tree-lined and there is little traffic. You won’t find any of the modern cluster developments here!

The lack of traffic can be largely attributed to the suburb’s exclusivity. The property prices are prohibitive for most – not surprising given that Sandhurst has some of the most expensive real estate in South Africa. Furthermore, the entire suburb is gated, with booms and security guards positioned at all the entrances and exits to the area. Even pedestrian thoroughfare is prohibited.

While Sandhurst is a handsome suburb and a quiet one, you can be out and about in the busy outside world in no time. Being located within the Sandton precinct, the heart of Joburg’s financial district as well as other business and leisure complexes are on your doorstep, among them, the Sandton City shopping centre (the largest in South Africa and boasting myriad exclusive boutiques and other outlets), and the Sandton Convention Centre.
