Scarborough Verblyf
Scarborough is an eclectic village,surrounded by sea and rocky hillsides. It lies just beyond Kommetijie, and is located along the Cape Peninsula. Despite being within arm’s reach of Cape Town, it exists as a rural town where an easy-going lifestyle is enjoyed by residents. While the area was privy to a recent property incline – which saw opportunistic businessmen and holidaymakers flock to Scarborough to set up shop – it is predominantly undeveloped with limited residential zones. Here, you won’t be disturbed by the roaring sounds of traffic and with a relatively low crime rate, very few houses are guarded with fences or alarm systems.
Visitors and passers-by will be enchanted by Scarborough’s unspoilt beauty – it is a nature lover's haven that is rich in vegetation. Having been designated a ‘conservation village’ in 1996; the area is designed around the natural layout of the land.
Nearby attractions include the Cape Point Nature Reserve, which lies adjacent to Scarborough. This 7750-hectare park boasts unparalleled views of the ocean and is home to 1 100 indigenous species of flora and fauna. If you’re a seasoned hiker or active outdoorsman, you’ll enjoy the numerous hiking trails scattered around the reserve. Bird enthusiasts are encouraged to keep their eyes peeled as there are some 250 bird species that can be spotted, including the endangered African black oystercatchers.
Scarborough Beach boasts long, sandy stretches where windswept walks are enjoyed by locals and holidaymakers alike. Beach-goers can frolic in the cascading waves, or for a more active beachside experience, partake in a myriad of water-based activities. As the area is a rich breeding ground for crayfish and mussel, the beach is a popular hotspot for fishermen and shellfish enthusiasts.
While there are few luxury hotels, Scarborough boasts various self-catering accommodation options. Visitors can enjoy a stay at the seaside villas or self-catering units which are located close to the beach.
While the area is home to only a handful of restaurants and a single convenience store, Simon's Town, Noordhoek and Fish Hoek are in close proximity should you wish to stock up on further supplies. These popular coastal towns also provide tourists with many outdoor attractions as well as beach-side eateries that boast quality cuisine.
