A verified ‘slow town’, Sedgefield is the embodiment of wholesome, back-to-the-earth living. The town is located just off the N2 in the Western Cape, between the towns of George and Knysna. It lies in the heart of the Garden Route, a Southern Cape tourist hotspot and a large contributor to Sedgefield’s healthy tourism industry.
Thanks to its co-ordinates, Sedgefield benefits from some of the best climate conditions to be had anywhere in the world. The temperatures are mild throughout the year and the sun shines most days. This is perfect considering Sedgefield is an outdoor junky’s definition of paradise.
The town, whose permanent population is a mixture of retirees and artist types (although these categories are not mutually exclusive), is spread across the mainland and an island. The landscapes to be explored here are diverse, from indigenous forest, to beaches and the lagoon, ensuring that there is something for everyone.
Birders will be delighted by the array of birds which congregate around the lagoon and make the forest their home, while budding botanists will be impressed by the fauna of the Goukamma Nature Reserve and surrounds.
Activities here are seemingly endless from sunbathing, surfing and fishing at the beach, to canoeing or wake-boarding on the lagoon and hiking or mountain biking in the forest. For foodies, the Saturday morning Wild Oats Farmers’ market is a Sedgefield institution, and a representation of the town’s approach to life: simple and respectful with an emphasis on top quality local gems.
Sedgefield maybe just one of the towns on this iconic stretch of the Garden Route, but there is no denying that the town marches to the beat of its own drum (and it’s a very slow beat). Unlike the affluent, fashionable set that frequents Plettenberg Bay up the road, or the throngs of international tourists that visit Knysna, the Sedgefield crowd are down-to-earth, unpretentious and enjoy the slow, artisanal approach to life.
