Simon’s Town is a quirky seaside village to the south of Cape Town’s city centre. Despite looking and feeling like a separate settlement all together, it is effectively a suburb of greater Cape Town, much like its neighbours Kalk Bay and Glencairn. Simon’s Town has bucket loads of character, imbued by the old buildings, its residents and its history. It can be reached by a particularly scenic railway route and it is in fact the southern terminus of North-South railway line.
Simon’s Town is a long narrow area, with its inhabitants and their homes wedged between False Bay and the mountain. Many homes and accommodation establishments creep up the side of the mountain, offering great views of the bay and the village below.
Speaking of the village below, the main road and historical centre is lined with Victorian-style double story buildings, housing a range of businesses from surf shops and scuba diving outfits to quaint little restaurants and cafes. There are even some vintage clothing stores which are fun to browse, and add a nice dimension to the Simon’s Town scene.
One of Simon’s Town’s claims to fame is the naval base, once home to the Royal Navy, now housing South Africa’s own navy. The iconic Boulders Beach is just to the south of the suburb and rightly so, is a magnet for tourists. It is not only a picturesque, protected beach, but also a hosts a breeding colony of the highly endangered African Penguin (also known as jackass penguins for their donkey-like bray).
Life is slow in this part of the world, and even if you just take a day trip down there, you’ll likely get sucked in and find it hard to leave.
