Fish Hoek Unterkünfte
If you are someone who loves the sea and enjoys a village atmosphere, you’ll like Fish Hoek. Like many places on the outskirts of the city, Fish Hoek was once a more or less independent settlement but these days it is considered a suburb of Cape Town, a fate shared by its neighbours Kalk Bay, Glencairn and Simon’s Town, all little towns on the False Bay coast.
It was established as a town in 1918, although it had been used as an informal whaling and fishing base for quite some time before that. There is not much left of this heritage though, and the nature surrounding Fish Hoek gets far more attention than the history of the suburb. If you are looking for somewhere to stay there is a multitude of Bed and Breakfasts as well as Self Catering Accommodation in Fish Hoek
Fish Hoek lies at the False Bay end of a short, wide valley, with False Bay on the one end and Noordhoek and Kommetjie, both on the Atlantic coast, on the other end. The valley is well known for Peer’s Cave, where a 12 000 year old Palaeolithic skeleton was found in 1927. It is a nice walk to the cave, which makes for interesting foray into natural history.
There are many other hikes and walks found nearby the centre of Fish Hoek, some taking you into the valley, while others take you over the mountains, providing fantastic views of False Bay.
Fish Hoek’s beach is also worth mentioning as it is considered one of the safest swimming beaches in Cape Town. The water in False Bay is also distinctly warmer than the Atlantic temperatures! The beach is popular among ocean lovers of all persuasions from wind surfers and hobie-cat sailors to surfers and life savers.
While Fish Hoek is largely an ‘outdoor’ suburb, dominated by nature-centric activities, you can get a touch of cultural immersion by doing a bicycle township tour of Masiphumelele, the township which serves the suburbs on the southern peninsula.
If at any point you wish to venture beyond Fish Hoek, the train line running from the Cape Town CBD all the way to Simon’s Town runs through Fish Hoek.
