Sodwana Bay Logement
The tiny settlement of Sodwana Bay lies in the far north of South Africa in KwaZulu Natal in an area known as the Elephant Coast. You will find accommodation in Sodwana Bay just outside the bounds of South Africa’s premier Unesco World Heritage Site, the iSimangaliso Wetlands Park and the bay is the only scuba diving site on this protected section of the coastline.
Sodwana Bay is roughly 400 kilometres north of Durban, between St Lucia and Lake Sibhaya, and yet it feels like a world away. There is minimal development and the town rests on the coastline of Sodwana Bay, a vibrant blue sea, renowned for its spectacular biodiversity. This setting imbues Sodwana Bay with an island atmosphere: the pace of life is slow and the locals are relaxed and friendly - unless it’s the Christmas season when many a braai (barbeque) turns into a party.
Sodwana Bay has many attractions but its main draw card is the scuba diving. Just off the coast, below the surface of the waves, are some of the southern-most tropical coral reefs in the world. This eco-system is home to over 1000 species including fish, invertebrates and corals.
Diving off the coast of Sodwana Bay, it is possible to have sightings of mantas, whale sharks and ragged tooth sharks, as well as migrating whale species, dolphins and turtles. In fact, this northern section of South Africa’s coastline is renowned as a destination to observe loggerhead and leatherback turtles nesting on the beaches.
Non-underwater activities in Sodwana Bay are numerous too and include things like horse-riding, fishing charters and guided tours. You can also take yourself off for a bird-watching expedition to Lake Sibhaya or visit iSimangaliso, with its hippos, beautiful lagoons and evidence of traditional fishing methods in action.
