Southern Drakensberg Verblyf - 2
The Drakensberg Mountains constitute a long range stretching over 200 kilometres. They are renowned for being some of the highest peaks in Southern Africa, with their basalt tips and sandstone slopes and cliff faces. Unlike other mountains, the Drakensberg Mountains are actually an escarpment dividing the plateau and the coastal lowlands. Almost the entire region is protected within the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg National Park, which was declared a World Heritage Site in 2000. It is home to a huge amount of biodiversity as well as one of the largest collections of San rock art in the southern hemisphere.
Given its size, the Drakensberg (which means Dragon’s Mountain) is divided into different areas, namely the Southern Drakensberg, Central Drakensberg and Northern Drakensberg. Each area is renowned for certain peaks and popular or well-known climbs. The Southern Drakensberg’s claim to fame is the Sani Pass.
The Sani Pass is a famous 4x4 route which crosses into the tiny, mountainous country of Lesotho. It literally is a long and winding road, just wide enough for one vehicle and characterised by tight hairpin bends. If you can get over the fear of wobbling off the tiny road into the deep precipice below, you’ll find the views to be extraordinary. Once safely at the top, you’ll find the Lesotho border control, and just beyond it, what’s touted as the highest pub in Africa. Up there you can enjoy a cold beer, a toasted sandwich and a view which will knock your socks off!
Other activities in the Southern Drakensberg are similar to those found in the other parts of the range – hiking, fishing and rock climbing coming to mind. Towns in this section of the Drakensberg include Himeville and Underberg.
