Drakensberg (KZN) Verblyf
The Drakensberg Mountain Range, reaching 3482 metres, is one of the highest mountain ranges in South Africa. Furthermore, its unique geological make up means that it is unique among the mountains of the world, bearing the most similarities to the Simian Mountains in Ethiopia.
The simplest break down of the Drakensberg’s geological composition is to state that the mountain tops consist of solid basalt rock, approximately 1400 metres thick. The slopes below the pointed tops consist of sandstone and the combination leads to the spectacular peaks and steep blocks which have been wowing visitors for years.
The Drakensberg Mountains are 200 kilometres long and span across the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu Natal, Lesotho, Swaziland, Mpumalanga, reaching as far as Tzaneen in Limpopo. The ‘Berg, as its sometimes known, is divided into 3 main sections, Central Drakensberg, Southern Drakensberg and Northern Drakensberg. Each area consists of its own set of magnificent peaks and valleys perfect for hiking and other adventure activities.
The diverse flora of the area, which consists of 2153 plant species, of which nearly 100 are endemic or near endemic, is a major draw card, as is the bird life. There are nearly 300 recorded bird species which attract birders from all corners. Another unique asset of the Drakensberg Mountains is the abundance of San rock art on the lower sandstone slopes. They say there are between 30 000 and 40 000 pieces, making it the largest collection of rock art in South Africa.
All of this natural heritage is protected within the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg National Park, and has been declared a World Heritage Site.
