Springs Unterkünfte
The town of Springs is situated on the East Rand of the Gauteng Province, to the east of Johannesburg and southeast of Pretoria. It is 50 kilometres and 72 kilometres from the two settlements respectively.
Springs, which falls under the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, began its life in the late 1880’s when a patch of municipal land known as the Springs, was designated as a mining area. The name came from the numerous natural water springs found in the area. In 1904, when both gold and coal mining were well underway, Springs was declared a town. By the 1930’s there were 8 gold mines in the area making it the single largest gold producing region in the world. By the end of the 60’s though the mining boom was over and the town became better known as an industrial hub.
Today Springs is still home to a small number of gold and coal mines in addition to the industries, such as processed metals, chemicals and paper, which keep its economy ticking over. These industries ensure that while Springs is not an enormous settlement, it is a well-developed one. The downtown region is home to a number of high-rises as well as two major shopping centres (The Avenues and Palm Springs & Veranda Shopping Centre), with more in the town’s suburbs. The small city is also known for having the biggest collection of small-scale art deco architecture outside of Miami, Florida.
Generally Springs’ climate is similar to the rest of Johannesburg with hot summers and afternoon thunder showers and cold winters sometimes resulting in early morning frost. The surrounding landscape is that of Highveld grassland.
Springs is most commonly visited by travelling businesspeople so the numerous parks are a welcome respite, especially the wetland area which is brimming with bird life.
