St Micheals on Sea is a delightful small town on the South Coast of KwaZulu Natal. It is so small in fact that the designation of ‘town’ is understandably considered a stretch by many. The settlement is really more of a hamlet, with only a few basic amenities to speak of and a mere sprinkling of houses. However, its miniscule size is what endears it to the hearts of all who visit it.
St Micheals on Sea lies on a breath-takingly beautiful stretch of South African coastline which has long been established as local-tourist hotspot, especially during the school holidays. The hamlet lies on a section of the Hibiscus Coast (KwaZulu Natal South Coast) between Margate and Port Shepstone, both of which are much larger and, as a result, busier towns. One of its closest neighbours is Shelly Beach.
The size of St Micheals on Sea allows one to feel like you have well and truly escaped the bustle of the big city, without having to drive too far out of Durban. This is one of its major attractions. The other is, naturally, the beach!
The settlement’s main beach is a popular surfing beach at the mouth of the Umhlangeni River. The large waves, big swell and warm Indian Ocean ensures that there is always a crowd of surfers in the water. For the less adventurous though, the lagoon makes for nice, safe swimming and there are also plenty of tidal pools to explore.
Visitors to the South Coast will never get tired of fishing (a popular past time in St Micheals too) and long beach walks in the early mornings provide the chance for some quiet contemplation and the opportunity to spot some dolphins (and/or whales in season).
