The town has a long history and this historic feel still pervades. Many of the original buildings located in its centre have been preserved in their original state, some dating back over 200 years.
Stellenbosch also plays host to The University of Stellenbosch, which has a high standing international reputation and attracts students from all over South Africa and the world. During the University term the town is bustling with young students who frequent the bars and restaurants, creating a vibrant and energetic atmosphere and night life. During the holiday season the town becomes a quiet, sleepy place ideal for relaxation and calm.
Walking through central Stellenbosch reveals a host of historical buildings, monuments as well as the relaxing botanical gardens. In between, there are many small shops and restaurants from which to experience the bounty of local food and wine that the region has to offer. The Stellenbosch area is widely renowned for its local produce, in particular the world class wines, but also its fruits, cheeses and other farm goods. These are available from many of the local restaurants and shops or directly from the farms themselves for those interested in visiting the wine route.
There are numerous internationally acclaimed wine farms on the wine route, from which one can indulge in tastings from a large selection of local wines or eat gourmet food from the range of restaurants the farms have to offer. Spending a day on the wine route is a must for any connoisseur of fine food and wine when visiting the region.
Stellenbosch has a jam-packed event calendar, ensuring that whenever you visit there will be something going on. The Stellenbosch Wine Festival is one of the most popular events each year, taking place at the time of the annual harvest and allowing visitors the opportunity to join in and learn more about the people and history of the area .
Due to its popularity with holiday makers, Stellenbosch boasts a variety of gorgeous places to stay including backpackers, guesthouses, and hotels. The area also offers many stunning wedding and conference venues located at scenic sites throughout the area.
