Summerstrand is the beachfront suburb of Port Elizabeth, with beautiful beaches on the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Port Elizabeth is located in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa and is well known as the hub of South Africa’s motor vehicle industry. The city lies on the edge of Algoa Bay and is renowned for its many beaches.

Summerstrand is a good temporary base for those visiting Port Elizabeth because not only is it visually appealing, but it’s also within a convenient distance of some of Port Elizabeth’s popular tourist attractions. For those visiting for business, Summerstrand is just 10 minutes from the city centre and a number of campuses for the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University are nearby too.

For recreational travellers, one of the nicest  things about staying at the local B&Bs and hotels in the area is Pollock Beach. This is a long sandy beach which is attractive for sunbathers, swimmers and surfers. The beach boasts a series of tidal pools which are brimming with sea life, providing an excellent diversion for children and adults alike. The beach is also renowned in the surfing community, and is known simply as ‘Pipe’ among body boarders and surfers.

The beach also has a boardwalk and cycle path for the active among you.

The Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment Complex is another attraction  that Summerstrand has going for it. The complex is designed around a man-made lake which is lined with a boardwalk. Given the Victorian-inspired architecture, a stroll along the boardwalk gives the sensation of an old-fashioned lakeside boardwalk. A modern twist however, is the musical fountain – a multi-media marvel which shoots water up to 60 metres into the air.

The complex is home to a 24 hour casino, a number of restaurants, retail outlets and a health and beauty spa.

With a beach to while away the days and the Boardwalk complex to while away the nights, Summerstrand might just be the perfect holiday accommodation in Port Elizabeth.
