Pollock Beach, referred to the locals as ‘the pipe’, is a beautiful bay located in the windy city of Port Elizabeth.
Each year, during the month of March, surfers from around South Africa flock to Pollock Beach to take part in the annual Billabong Gromcomp. This event sees people of all races and cultures competing together in a variety of events.
While predominantly a hot spot for surfers, the sea is safe for paddlers, body boarders and swimmers. Beach-goers who aren’t looking to take a dip in the ocean can play a game of volleyball, or just lie on the beach. Alternatively, take a long meander along the coastline and look dor seashells that have been washed ashore during high tide.
The little ones can do some exploring on their own in the rock pools. Here a variety of small fish, hermit crabs, colourful anemones, and other fascinating marine life can be spotted.
Golfers can take a visit to the Humewood Golf Club. Rated as one of the best estates in South Africa, seasoned players will have their skills put to the test at this challenging course. While the club offers amateurs the opportunity to better their skills, some major national tournaments and competitions have also been held here, including the South African Open.
The Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment Complex, situated on the Nelson Mandela Bay beachfront, offers a myriad of activities to its visitors. Holidaymakers looking to take refuge from the midday sun can enjoy a meal at one of the many restaurants, enjoy some shopping or, if they’re feeling lucky, play the slots at the casino.
