Thabazimbi Unterkünfte
The word Thabazimbi means ‘mountain of iron’, a rather self-explanatory title. The town of the same name is located in the Limpopo province of South Africa. It came into being, as many South African settlements do, because a natural resource, this time iron, was found in the area. JH Williams was the first person to come across iron in the area in 1919 and the town was finally proclaimed in 1953.
Thabazimbi is still propped up by the iron mine, which is run by Kumba Iron Ore. Approximately 2 million tons of iron is mined per year and the mine shaft is one of the largest in Africa. It is hard to deny that the mine is blight on the landscape, but thanks to its location, beauty prevails.
Speaking of its location, Thabazimbi is situated in one of the fastest-growing eco-tourism hubs in South Africa, a fact largely thanks to the landscape.
Thabazimbi lies at the foot of the Ysterberg range (iron mountain) and is surrounded by the Witfonteinrand, Boshofberg and Kransberg mountains, all of which provide an element of undeniable beauty to the area. Arguably the best way to experience this beauty however is to head out of town to one of the many private game reserves for which the area is known.
One of the most famous reserves is the Marakele National Park, which is run by the South African National Parks (SANParks) organisation. This reserve is 20 kilometres to the north east of Thabazimbi and apart from the opportunity for a wide variety of coveted animal sightings, its location in the unique Waterberg district (a World Heritage Site), makes it extremely popular.
Thabazimbi is a good place to bed down both for travelling businesspeople involved with the mines, and for eco-tourists en route to a nature reserve.
