Umhlanga Ridge Unterkünfte
Umhlanga, which means ‘Place of Reeds’ in Zulu, was initially developed as a resort town to the north of Durban. It was founded in 1895 and a few years after being declared a town, a new hotel was constructed (in1920), followed by a shop, a lighthouse and the KwaZulu Natal Sharks Board (then known as the Natal Anti Shark Measures Board). Its name was derived from the Ohlanga River, which has its mouth about 3 kilometres north of Umhlanga.
In the 1980’s development of Umhlanga expanded inland, enveloping the hill behind the centre of Umhlanga. This area up on the hill is now known as Umhlanga Ridge. Many sugarcane fields were bulldozed to make way for the new developments and for this reason the area is often referred to as the Sugar Coast.
Umhlanga Ridge came on very quickly and has become a major retail, residential and commercial hub of Durban. In fact, the overall popularity of the Umhlanga area and the massive migration of businesses from the Durban city centre to the area has lead people to compare Durban’s Umhlanga to Sandton in Johannesburg, which has slowly taken over the city centre’s role as the financial and commercial hub of Joburg.
Umhlanga Ridge for example is home to many upmarket businesses and Durban’s impressive Gateway Theatre of Shopping, a huge mall. It is also a sought-after residential address among Durban’s well-to-do.
Umhlanga Ridge, as you might imagine, is a popular base for visitors owing to the many businesses, the view and proximity to the beach, and the ease with which you can explore other parts of Durban.
