Umtentweni Unterkünfte
Umtentweni is one of the gorgeous holiday beach resorts on the South Coast of KwaZulu Natal. The town, with its lovely beach and distinct lack of crowds, is located roughly 120 kilometres from KwaZulu Natal’s largest city, Durban. It lies between two rivers, the Umtentweni River (named after a type of grass which grows on its banks) and the largest river on the South Coast, the Mzimkulu River (which means ‘home of all rivers’ in Zulu). Port Shepstone, the commercial, educational and administrative capital of the southern part of the province is just on the opposite bank of the Mzimkulu River.
The town on Umtentweni has plenty to offer the holiday-maker. The heart of the town is just 80 metres from the main beach. Tweni Beach, which is manned by lifeguards during the high season, is on the Indian Ocean coastline, meaning that the water is warm throughout the year. Furthermore, the subtropical climate ensures that the beach is especially refreshing during the hot, humid summers and pleasant even during the cooler, drier winters.
Activities at Umtentweni include swimming and lazing around on the beach (there is a paddling pool too for very small swimmers), surfing and fishing. Watching the sunset (or even sunrise if you can manage it) is well worth the effort and a stroll along the beach at any time of the day could yield a sighting of dolphins and even whales.
Umtentweni is attractive because it offers many amenities, a pretty beach setting and many of the same activities as other South Coast towns, and yet it is not quite as crowded as some of its neighbours. If you are looking for the perfect place to unwind by the sea, Umtentweni may just be it.
