Vaal Dam Unterkünfte
The Vaal Dam has long been a retreat for busy city dwellers in Johannesburg and Pretoria. The dam is the second biggest in South Africa (by area) and is a hub of water sport activities for South Africa’s interior. Visiting the Vaal Dam offers both a sense of tranquillity and a wide variety of activities to partake in.
The dam, which was completed in the late 1930’s has a shoreline of 800km and holds a huge volume of water. It is supplied with water from the Lesotho Highlands Water Project and plays a vital role in the water supply infrastructure of Gauteng and surrounding the areas.
While the Vaal Dam touches 3 South African provinces, the most active section of the dam’s shoreline is in Gauteng (despite the largest section of the shoreline being in the Free State). On weekends and over holiday periods Joburgers make the 1-2 hour trip down to the dam’s shore to relax and take part in water sports.
Some of things that people get up to while on holiday at the Vaal Dam include kite-surfing, canoeing, paddle boating, power boating and jet-skiing, wake boarding and water skiing. The Vaal’s fish population, which includes carp, barbell, bass and yellow fish, draws fishermen who either pick a solitary spot on the shore or fish off the side of a boat. Since the Vaal Dam attracts fishermen from all over SA, most make use of the resorts and fishing accommodation readily available in the area.
Yachting is also a popular activity on the dam and it plays host to the largest inland yachting regatta in the world – the Round the Island regatta. This regatta circumvents the 5 kilometre long island in the dam (which was once used as a secret meeting spot for the apartheid government). Numerous other boating events take place throughout the year too.
