Vaalwater Accommodatie - 2
The small town of Vaalwater can be found in the north western region of South Africa’s Limpopo province. This area is home to South Africa’s indigenous Sotho speaking people, and the town’s 8000 plus population is majority Sotho.
Vaalwater lies within a stone’s throw of numerous geographical features. It is on the banks of the Mokolo River, situated on the southern edge of the incredible Waterberg mountain range and is a few kilometres from the international border with Botswana.
Vaalwater is not a widely recognised tourist destination in its own right, although it does have a few quirky offerings, one being the thatch-roofed church, constructed from natural materials and designed by none other than Sir Herbert Baker himself. It is located just outside of Vaalwater on the road to Melkrivier.
The town is significant for travellers not only because it is in the heart of a fascinating and attractive area, but because if you are planning to head up to Botswana, this is the last time you will see basic amenities such as banks, grocery stores, doctors and petrol stations for quite some time. Stay at one of the many self-catering options around the town to stock up for the next leg of your trip.
The attractions surrounding Vaalwater are plentiful, with the Waterberg taking the cake of course. The town lies on the self-drive Limpopo tourist route called the Waterberg Biosphere Experience. The Waterberg, with its striking blue-ish colouring and smooth, rounded rock formations have been officially classified as a Unesco Biosphere Reserve, and offer exceptional opportunities for photographers, geology buffs, artists and adventurer-seekers.
Vaalwater is also close to many of Limpopo’s game reserves, offering big 5 safaris and a chance to lose yourself at one of the lodges in the African bush.

Vaalwater
Vaalwater is a remote and aged area, with calm and welcoming people. It is the last stop to shop and put in fuel, as it is the doorstep to many private game farms. It is unique in that on the way to your bush experience, you can buy biltong off the side of the road on one side, and car bumpers down the road on the other. There are a number of well-known as well as unknown shops and service stores.
