Welgevonden Game Reserve Accommodatie
The Welgevonden Game Reserve is a stunning showcase of a Southern African landscape and promises guests a special, scenic and luxurious experience in the heart of South Africa’s interior. Part of its appeal is certainly the luxury accommodation available within the reserve, as well as its close proximity to Johannesburg and Pretoria.
The game reserve is situated 3 hours north of Joburg, on the Waterberg plateau. It forms part of the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve – a large project which involves reserves in the area working together to provide larger corridors for big predators to roam. It is a conservation effort of note, and conservation, research and development are things which are very important to the folks at Welgevonden.
The name Welgevonden means ‘well found’ in Dutch, and when you arrive there you will know exactly why. Most of the accommodation on the reserve comprises 5 star lodges with great views, exceptionally comfy rooms and attentive staff. No private vehicles are allowed in the reserve, instead game drives are offered as part of the package. The animals in the area, having never been hunted, have little fear of humans so up-close encounters are almost guaranteed. And there is plenty to see.
The Waterberg region is home to a diversity of landscapes from gorges, wooded mountains, open plains and rocky gorges. Together these habitats play home to over 250 bird species and over 50 mammals, including the once infamous, now famous Big 5. The Welgevonden Game Reserve also boasts a small San rock art site, something which is always quite an intriguing thing to observe.
