Vioolsdrift Accommodatie
The miniscule settlement of Vioolsdrift is the official border town between South Africa and Namibia and as such it is located in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. It is surrounded by very little apart from red rocks and sand.
The town can be reached within 7 hours driving time from Cape Town along the N7 highway, which is also known as the Cape to Namibia Route. The nearest large town is Springbok, roughly an hour’s drive away on the South African side. Beyond Vioolsdrift lies about 700 kilometres of desert before you reach the next city, which happens to be Windhoek, the capital city of Namibia.
However, as desolate and empty as Vioolsdrift and its surroundings may seem, do not be fooled. The town is perched on the banks of the mighty Orange River (also known as the Gariep River) and lies just a few kilometres from the starkly beautiful Richtersveld National Park.
A few kilometres downstream from Vioolsdrift you will come across a fertile agricultural area where the green fields exist in striking contrast with the surrounding rocks and sand. The national park of course has plenty to offer, if you are willing to look for it. By immersing yourself in the environment you will start noticing not only intriguing patterns on the rocks and larger rock formations, but lizards, snakes and birds that somehow survive day in and day out in this dry place.
The river is home to a concentration of animals like monkeys and is also a favourite spot for fishing and canoeing. It is possible to do 4 to 6 day canoe trips down the river, which depart from Vioolsdrift, and from the town it’s easy to make the beautiful Augrabies Falls your next stop.
