Vryburg Unterkünfte
Vryburg is a thriving agricultural town in the North West province of South Africa. It is located to the west of Klerksdorp and Orkney and is ideally positioned on a number of important transport links. For starters, it lies on the N14 which connects Johannesburg in Gauteng to Springbok in the Northern Cape. It also lies on Rhodes’ great railway which runs from Cape Town beyond Victoria Falls.
Vryburg has a rich history which is preserved in a number of monuments and old buildings. It was established in 1882 and in 1883 was named the capital of a Boer republic, the Republic of Stellaland. The name ‘Vryburg’ comes from the Afrikaans words vry burger or ‘free citizen’ and refers to the citizens’ emancipation from the Cape Colony and the British. There are a number of beautiful old buildings in town, such as the old stone church, built in 1904. There is also a concentration camp cemetery which reminds one of the casualties of the Boer War.
Today Vryburg is said to be the agricultural capital of the Bophirima region and the heart of South Africa’s cattle-rearing industry. Some of the crops which have earned it such a prestigious status in the area include peanuts and maize.
The town sees many visitors as a result of two things, namely its location on the major transport routes, and its powerful reputation in the agricultural industry. It is a wealthy, developed town with well-preserved older buildings rubbing shoulders with modern ones. It boasts all the amenities you could need.
Some activities in the area include visiting rock art sites, playing a round of golf, visiting the Leon Taljaard Nature Reserve and exploring the Theiler Museum, where you will find some of the equipment used by Sir Arnold Theiler, the man responsible for establishing the Onderstepoort Veterinary School in Pretoria.
