Vryheid Accommodatie
Vryheid is a coal mining and cattle farming town in the Zululand region of KwaZulu Natal (KZN). It lies approximately 70 kilometres north east of Dundee.
The town lies in the heart of KZN’s historic battlefield region, where many clashes took place between the local Zulu population (of which King Shaka is the most often mentioned member) and various outsiders. One of the battles to occur near Vryheid is the infamous Battle of Blood River, which took place between the Boers and the Zulus in 1838. There are also battle sites from the Anglo Boer War in the area.
There are also many historic buildings dotted about town, 2 of which are schools, Vryheid Comprehensive Secondary School and Inkama High School, which were awarded this status in 2007. Other historical buildings include the Dutch Reformed Church and the Oud Raadsaal (old council chambers).
Vryheid lies near the sources of 4 major rivers: the Black Umfolozi River, White Umfolozi River, Pongolo River and the Mkhuze River. Subsequently, wetlands in the area are plentiful and form habitats for a variety of bird species making this town great for bird watching. This lush terrain also provides plenty of interesting views for hikers.
There are numerous game reserves in the area too, giving one the opportunity to get a glimpse of South Africa’s famous wildlife. Reserves in the area boast animals like cheetah, rhino, elephant, brown and spotted hyena, giraffe, leopard and a variety of antelope species.
The town’s name, 'Vryheid' means liberty or freedom in Afrikaans. The climate in the area is considered sub-tropical so expect hot, humid summers and warm, drier winters.
