Wakkerstroom Verblyf
Wakkerstroom is a quiet town in Mpumalanga, South Africa. It also happens to be the second oldest town in the province. It lies on the border of KwaZulu Natal and is surrounded by breath-taking panoramic views and rolling emerald hills.
Wakkerstroom is considered 'the jewel of Mpumalanga' and is strewn with gorges, mountain streams, wetland areas and dams. It’s not surprising then that it is home to an astounding number of bird species and celebrated all over the world as a birder's paradise.
One especially renowned birding location is the Wakkerstroom Wetland which is home to a number of endangered bird species such as the white winged fluff-tail, the grey crowned crane, Rudd's lark and Botha's Lark. This wetland adjoins the BirdLife Centre South Africa which supports a large number of birds. Wakkerstroom also has a variety of grassland birds making for a healthy South African bird viewing experience.
The town’s economy is based on farming, especially sheep and cattle farming. Some unique animals also feature on the livestock reel in the area, for example, alpaca goats, a relative of the llama which bears a striking resemblance to their South American counterparts.
Wakkerstroom is an extremely popular destination among city-dwellers in need of a relaxing break. This is not surprising as the valley in which the town lies is picturesque to say the least.
The town also boasts numerous historic buildings such as the courthouse (built in 1897), unique for being the only building in South Africa built without a cornerstone. There is also a museum as well as a healthy sprinkling of pubs, restaurants and even a health and beauty spa.
