Thirty kilometres south of Johannesburg is the beautiful rural area of Walkerville. It’s bordered by De Deur to the south and Eikenhof to the north.
Walkerville offers a peaceful, country life not too far from one of the busiest, noisiest cities in the country. It is one of several Walkervilles in the world: 2 in Australia, 2 in the USA, 2 in the United Kingdom, 1 in Canada and is also the home of the bus in the children's story, The Magic School Bus.
But, this Walkerville is a South African charm, with apple farms and horse ranches and the De Deur Flea Market not far away. Consisting of about 3.5 kilometres of stalls, the De Deur Flea Market which takes place every Saturday will not leave you wanting. On the other hand, the Walkerville Farmers’ Market, which offers fresh produce, crafts and home-made baked goods, sums up the country community and atmosphere that is the essence of Walkerville.
The village also boasts an abundance of bird life consisting of almost every species under the sun, or so it seems, with anything from barn owls to Cape robins and African Hoopoes being spotted in local gardens. Even African orioles and finches are known to inhabit the area.
Not too far from Walkerville one can view more wildlife at the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve. The reserve supports a number of plant and animal species including springbok, cheetah, the common duiker, zebra and over 200 species of South African birds. Here too, one can take a hike along one of many hiking trails that lead through the 13 000 hectare reserve, some a few hours long and others a few days long.
