Walmer is a reasonably well-to-do suburb found to the south of Port Elizabeth’s central business district. Port Elizabeth is sometimes known as ‘The Windy City’ or ‘The Friendly City’, and both of these nicknames apply to Walmer. One of Port Elizabeth’s larger suburbs, it is aesthetically pleasing thanks to its leafy green nature and convenient due to its proximity to various points in Port Elizabeth.
Walmer itself boasts the Walmer Country Club, an 18-hole golf course which, as its website states, is a veritable challenge for amateur players, thanks to the notorious wind, the coastal bush and the trees which line the course. It’s a friendly club though and visitors will be made to feel at home.
Walmer Shopping Centre is arguably the beating heart of the suburb, with restaurants, retail outlets, a cinema and service-related stores, ensuring that when the wind is pumping, making outdoor life unpleasant, you can always escape to the centre for a morning or afternoon of hassle free entertainment.
Bordering Walmer is the seaside suburb of Humewood, which is home to the Nelson Mandela Bay beachfront. One of pert Elizabeth’s main attractions is situated here, namely the Bayworld Museum and Snake Park. Bayworld’s main prerogatives are research and education in an effort to push conservation of South Africa’s unique natural heritage. At the museum you can learn about indigenous cultures, the life of whales and of course, snakes. And that’s just a taster.
Sardinia Bay is a beautiful beach, popular among walkers and wind surfers just outside of the city. Given Walmer’s southerly location, this spectacular marine reserve, which also boasts some good scuba diving sites, is pretty close to the suburb.
A final draw card is Walmer’s close proximity to the Port Elizabeth airport.

Walmer is a peaceful and attractive suburb of Port Elizabeth. It was a treat to walk around in the suburb during our stay. Locality is great and we would certainly stay there again.
