White River Accommodatie - 3

White River is a small farming community just over 20 kilometres to the north of Nelspruit, capital of the Mpumalanga province. The town was established after the Anglo-Boer War on the banks of the Emanzimhlope River, a Swazi name meaning ‘white water’. It is from this that the town’s name was derived. The Emazimhlope River is a tributary of the Crocodile River, one of the major rivers flowing through the Kruger National Park. The Crocodile River Valley is a major tourist attraction nearby.

White River lies on the Mpumalanga lowveld and like Nelspruit, experiences a subtropical climate, with hot humid summers (complete with rainfall) and mild, dry winters. This climate supports the town’s agricultural pursuits and makes White River one of the most fertile areas in the province. Tropical fruits such as citrus, bananas and mangos are grown in the area and vegetables and timber are also important industries. Farming practises in White River today are very similar to those used by the settlers after the Anglo-Boer War.

Surrounded by lush greenery and forests, White River is an idyllic sort of place with plenty of outdoor activities on offer such as hiking and mountain biking. There is the Lowveld Botanical Garden to explore as well as a reptile park.

If you want real wildlife action though, you should head to the Kruger National Park, a mere stone’s throw away. White River is close to the Malelane and Crocodile Bridge gates, both of which fall into the Southern Circle area. This area is renowned for its wealth of wildlife thanks to the ever-present water sources and abundance of food. The various lion prides and their unique hunting methods are particularly well-known, and the region is also acknowledged to have the largest percentage of Kruger’s rhino population.
