The Wild Coast, on the east coast of South Africa’s Eastern Cape province, gets its name both from the untamed nature of the ocean on this part of the coast, but also from its sometimes rugged and unkempt coastline. Accommodation on the Wild Coast offers everything the adventurous traveller could be after, from gripping scenery to fascinating local cultures and myriad adventure activities.
This stretch of coast begins just north of East London and encompasses a number of towns such as Coffee Bay, Hole in the Wall and Port St John’s. In the south, the name doesn’t quite do justice to the landscape, which is characterised by gently undulating hills and grasslands. Moving northwards though and the coastline becomes far more rugged with indigenous forests, steep gorges as the rivers fight their way to the shore, and rocky outcrops punctuating the sandy beaches.
Throughout the region the climate is mild, rarely dropping below 9°C in the winter or above 28°C in the summer. It receives quite a lot of rain in summer, making the months of December to March quite wet and muddy.
Staying at Wild Coast accommodation allows you to get in touch with an indigenous African culture. The area is part of the Transkei, a traditional area for the isiXhosa people, and previously a Bantustan during Apartheid. Today, small huts are sprinkled across the hills and it is common to see women young initiates painted white from head to toe and women dressed in traditional shweshwe prints and layered skirts.
Some of the activities on offer on the Wild Coast include hiking, quad-biking, surfing and mountain biking while horse-riding is also a pleasant way to take in your surroundings.
