The small town of Wilderness is a peaceful place for holiday-makers to relax. It has been growing in popularity since the 1800’s, when the first seaside boarding house was opened in an old homestead. Today, Wilderness offers the same sense of tranquillity as it did all those years ago.

Wilderness lies on the N2, at the foot of the Kaaiman’s River Pass, a short drive from George, the administrative capital of the Garden Route. Given its position on the world-famous Garden Route, it is favoured for similar reasons as the larger towns of Plettenberg Bay and Knysna for example.

For starters it has an extremely mild climate, with little temperature variation throughout the year. Summer temperatures don’t often surpass 28°C while in winter the average low is around 10°C. The average annual rainfall is 700mm which falls throughout the year. These conditions conspire to provide the perfect conditions for the lush afromontane forests which are found on this section of the Southern Cape’s coast, and in turn support a vast array of eco-systems.

Visiting Wilderness will allow you the opportunity to visit the Wilderness section of the Garden Route National Park, home to some pristine and beautiful forest vegetation and exciting hiking and walking trails. The forest of yellow woods and other flora is home to wildlife such as duiker and bushbuck as well as the iconic Knysna loerie. Forest vegetation outside of the reserve is brimming with mountain bike tracks, and the slopes of the Outeniqua Mountains, which encompass Wilderness, ensure the downhill single tracks get your adrenaline pumping.

Other activities include various water sports on the lagoon and slightly further afield, whale and dolphin watching from a boat at sea. You can also go paragliding in the area and paddle a canoe, go abseiling, kloofing and horse-riding.

Alternatively, you can do nothing but laze around on Wilderness Beach, which has Blue Flag status, or admire the view of the lagoon and ocean, simultaneously from your guesthouse, hotel or self-catering chalet.
